24=20 Hours of Sunlight: Recovery

I knew = recovery=20 couldn't be as easy as it first seemed. I mean, muscle = soreness and=20 headache gone and feeling normal by day 2? After 24 hours of = continuous movement? And not a blister to be seen? =20 That can=E2=80=99t be right, can it? Right, it can=E2=80=99t = be.

Proving a = two-day=20 recovery from a 24-hour race is, in fact, crazy talk; I have = a=20 couple of symptoms that point to a probable bit of bleeding = in my=20 stomach. Awesome, huh? Yes, I know I=E2=80=99ve admitted one = of the main=20 reasons I did the 24 Hours of=20 Sunlight race was to make my body hurt and suffer (in = ways most=20 any body would after such an effort versus the unpredictable = and=20 weird ways multiple sclerosis, which I was diagnosed with in = June,=20 2006 makes my body hurt). But is it too late to = recant?

After = all, MS might=20 sometimes kidnap my vision, cause me to fall out of a = perfectly fine=20 chair at a crowded Bozeman coffee house, and affect my = memory to the=20 point I repeat the same thing three times in five minutes, = but it=E2=80=99s=20 never required that I take a stool sample. Never. = Ever.

Exercise-induced=20 gastritis? Sure, I=E2=80=99m not the first endurance athlete = to suffer from=20 this =E2=80=93 in 1979, after setting the world record for = the marathon,=20 Derek Clayton told reporters, =E2=80=9CTwo hours later the = elation had worn=20 off, I was urinating quite large clots of blood, and I was = vomiting=20 black mucous and had black diarrhea.=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93 but = I bet there aren=E2=80=99t too=20 many other Sunlight competitors scheduling endoscopies this = week.=20 (FYI, Clayton had it much worse than I did.) But maybe = having a=20 probe shoved down your throat post-race is better than = multiple=20 race-time runs to the bathroom, which, according to a study in the International SportMed = Journal,=20 30%-83% of runners experience (surprisingly, I = wasn=E2=80=99t able to find a=20 study specific to randonee skiers).

Hey Dina,

I read your recovery article. I hope your stomach issues = are not=20 serious and that you get to feeling better soon! My blisters = are=20 healing and thankfully did not stop me from enjoying an = amazing=20 powder day at Sunlight yesterday. I haven't done any cardio = yet=20 (feeling LAZY) but I plan to run later today. My other foot = pain=20 seems to be gone. Anyway, take care and get well and I know = you'll=20 be back on the slopes soon! By the way, did you know you = made the=20 Denver Post? Congrats again!
